Pergale: Horizontalios maldos palaima

22/03/11  ||  Love Lagerkvist

I’m fully aware of the fact that words like “weird”, “fucked up” and “did they use some kind of dwarf there?” are incredibly overused these days, but in the curious case of Pergale and their debut I constantly fail in finding better adjectives. The band themselves try to describe the sonic they produce as “Victorious Psycho Black Rock” while the metal archives label them as “Depressive Black’n‘Roll”, a tag that makes you wonder if the person who created the page actually listened to the band. Because while there might have been various substances often linked with depression in circulation during the recording of “Horizontalios maldos palaima” (alcohol, cannabis and nicotine according to “The addiction song”) the music is far from depressive. Mostly it’s just plain weird (in that distinct Lithuanian way).

Weird to the extent that the main reason for listening itself actually the music itself, but rather what the crap the band are going to do next. While this makes for some interesting first listens, the mediocrity of the music itself becomes glaringly obvious after the smoke of unpredictability has vanished. With the exception of the genuinely awesome opener “Að tave subadysiu”, the bulk of the music barely does anything more than just inject schizophrenic doses of insanity in the “Finnish bar metal àla Fintroll” groundwork it so firmly stands on.

Recommendation: Whip it up during your next party, sit back and enjoy the perlex and drunken reactions. Then whip it out on ebay.
